Resolution

President of Conflict Resolution Academy
Resolution is the art of managing conflict and resolving disputes at the lowest level possible. Dr. Richard Voyles says, "Conflict is fundamentally a request for communication. Effective conflict management is accomplished by one’s ability to control two things: yourself (who you are) and your attitude (how you act)."

The roots of a disagreement are based in miscommunication and/or a lack of communication. Differing values, opposing objectives, different workplace methodology and personality types set the stage for conflict. The psychology of conflict is the fear of loss. When there is a controversy, people fight in order to:
  • Stop the loss
  • Lessen the loss
  • Get back what was lost

In order to resolve conflict at its lowest level, it is necessary to identify self interests. Individuals must discover why they are angry and what they need to resolve the issue.
  • What do I want?
  • Why do I want it?
  • How will not getting it impact my life?
When these questions are answered you can uncover the potential results and identify the impact. There will be the opportunity to receive respect, to be listened to and heard and to have honest consideration of all ideas. These steps can lead to resolution.

The characteristics of a good resolution are:
  • Any loss, or potential loss, is addressed.
  • A comfortable decision is created for all involved.
  • The solution provides for each person’s interests.
In order to create a successful resolution, you must know what you want, pay close attention to perceived loss when identified, be flexible and make a commitment that you are willing to live up to.

Exploring and understanding each of these ideas is a step toward improving the ability of managers, supervisors and employees to move toward resolution successfully in a variety of settings, both in the workplace and in personal situations. In order to customize a training program to meet your needs for leadership skills, Conflict Resolution Academy has developed a system designed to create a presentation with sensitivity to time constraints and training budgets. Conflict Resolution Academy has developed a Performance Documentation Instrument and training that is designed to teach managers to create a collaborative document that looks at the individual performance of the employee and his/her impact in the job that they are doing. It helps develop an action plan with accountability and serves to support the parties involved in the review. Managers and supervisors who are trained in the use of this form will benefit from the skills introduced when it is necessary to have a difficult conversation.
